The Broward County Driver’s Education program is very excited about the upcoming school year.  We are adding our thirteenth site, West Broward, which will serve approximately 600-700 additional students.  In 2007-2008 we were able to serve over 7,000 students which included 56 exceptional students.  Our Driving program for exceptional students continues to grow and we have added one more instructor certified in both Driver’s Education and as an ESE teacher.  With the addition of this instructor we have set up one more vehicle with all the appropriate apparatuses to help serve our growing population.

An online registration system has also been added to the Driver’s Education program.  The system was utilized for the first time this past summer.  Other improvements have been made to our website (http://www.browardschools.com/driversed) which will allow parents and students to learn more about Driver’s Safety and the charge of keeping our young teens safe on our roadways.

As our economy continues it downward spiral and education budgets continue to be cut state wide we are very proud to say that we will continue to expand.  The ‘Dori Slosberg Driver’s Safety’ law is the major funding unit for the program and as long as tickets are handed out county wide we will continue to receive $5 for every traffic ticket issued.

What does a Red Light Really Mean…?

I have stopped many people for running a red light over the past 28 years. Few admit that they ran the light. Many say that they did not have time to stop or that they did a ” California stop”, rolling through a red light while making a right hand turn. Either way, they ran a red light. Traffic signals are timed to give a driver who is doing the speed limit plenty of time to stop as the light cycles. If you are speeding, it does take longer to stop, resulting in two violations (speeding & running a red light). Additionally, it places an innocent victim in your path which is usually your front bumper into the drivers door of the victim. Guess who gets hurt the most often? Many people ask where does the violation happen? The answer is easy. If the light is red before you enter the square of the intersection, it is a violation. The best rule to follow is to use the white stop bar as a guide. Always be prepared to stop at the white stop bar. About ” California stops”. There is no such thing. Red always means stop first before turning right. Many pedestrians are the victim of a ” California stop”. The violator is too busy trying to beat the traffic coming to their left and many times they do not see the pedestrian who stepped off the curb to their right. How about U-turns on red? NO…NO…NO… you are not allowed to make a U-turn on a red signal. You MUST wait for the arrow or a green light before making a U-turn. Don’t expect to get a warning from me if I stop you for running a red light. Do expect to pay a $176.50 ticket. Drive Safe.

The Broward County Driver’s Education program has had another successful year. For the 2007-2008 school year we are approaching 7,000 students served. This is 1,000 more students than we served last year.

A new online student registration system is another enhancement that has been made to the program. Students are now able to go online and pick the site and time that they will take our Driver’s Education course. This system also has areas for exceptional students that will help us accommodate all students and get them on the road driving.

Online timesheets were rolled out the first week of April 2008. Instructors will now enter all of their time into the computer system and are offered many options including a history of time submitted and access to many other payroll options. This system was essential for our model that includes only after hours driving. We believe that the new payroll system and new online registration system will save approximately $20,000 of salary annually.

In August of 2008 we will open our 13th site at West Broward High School. Expansion to all of the Broward Counties public high schools continues to be one of our goals. The addition of West Broward High has moved us closer to our goal.
